Free Trees for Settle

free trees

We have 420 harvestable  trees, to create a community orchard around Settle Area.

We will produce a map with the tree locations on. The idea is to have these as public access trees for harvesting, when they have grown. Thus, please ensure that they are planted in an area where you have permission to plant, and that the public could access to harvest them. Eg, it could be on a perimeter wall of your own / business property, or in your front garden, if you don't mind people coming in. Or, in a public flower bed etc.

They are currently small saplings, that will grow, as per the information alongside ->

Each Tree comes with a stake and protection for it.

The trees are free, but it would be nice if you gave a donation - either when collecting, or via paypal buttons below:

Crab Apple

The Crab Apple is a popular tree which produces beautiful blossom in spring and small colourful apples in the autumn. Brilliant for decorating and arranging in the home.

The apples are used to make Crab Apple jelly which is delicious on crumpets and used as a sweet relish for roast meats. The tree will grow up to 10m. Crabapple trees are also a welcome addition to mixed hedges.

The current height of the trees is approximately 10-20cm and they can be planted out all year round.

Elder

The Elder is native throughout the British Isles and can grow to around 9m. It usually flourishes wherever the nitrogen content of the soil is high and does well in rich neglected ground. The plant colonises an area quickly due to its speed of growth.

Large instantly recognisable white flower heads appear in early July followed by a mass of small black fruit. The fruit and flowers make excellent wines and jams, as well as Elderflower cordial and are rich in vitamin C.

The current height of the trees is approximately 10-20cm and they can be planted out all year round.

Blackthorn

The Blackthorn is native throughout the British Isles and grows to around 4m if left uncut. The white flowers appear in early spring before coming into leaf, standing out against the black twigs. Blackthorn spreads with suckers and has strong thorns so is often used in hedging to create a stronger barrier.

Many birds nest among its branches and the fruit, sloes, are made into jam, wine and used for flavouring gin.

The current height of the trees is approximately 30-50cm and they can be planted out all year round.
